Gartner, Inc. has announced the winners of the 2017 Supply Chainnovator Awards. The awards, announced at the Gartner Supply Chain Executive Conference taking place here through Thursday, recognize unconventional, innovative and high-impact supply chain initiatives in the healthcare, high-tech manufacturing and consumer/retail sectors. The six winners across the three categories are as follows:
Healthcare Supply Chainnovators:
GlaxoSmithKline — GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) won the 2017 Life Sciences Supply Chainnovator award for its innovative partnership with Kuehne + Nagel (K+N) for third-party logistics (3PL) services. This global 3PL partnership is unprecedented in scope and scale in the life sciences industry and involves significant transparency and trust between the partners. By partnering with K+N, GSK levered their logistics specialization, efficiencies and scale. It also realized benefits that included consistent global practices, lower costs and improved visibility of the movement of its goods and the costs of delivering products.
Intermountain Healthcare — Intermountain Healthcare showed high-impact chainnovation in the development of a comprehensive homecare and hospice fulfillment center. The facility and its operations enable an unprecedented and integrated portfolio of home health services in terms of scale and capability, including home medical equipment (HME), oxygen tank refills, custom wheelchair craftsmanship, a pharmacy, clinical engineering, hospice and a retail store. Collectively, the operation enables a continuum of care that assures the home and patients’ needs are a continuation of the acute care experience at Intermountain while incorporating cost efficiency and high quality of service.
High-Tech Manufacturing Supply Chainnovators:
Haier — Chinese household appliance producer Haier’s Interconnected Factory is a digital business model that uses the Internet of Things (IoT) to promote a shift from mass production to mass individualization. It seeks to connect the customer experience with the factory and integrate all requirements and demand into the supply chain and factory processes. This has been achieved using Haier’s own platform, COSMOplat, to orchestrate a wide series of interactions between its customers, factories, products, supply chain, R&D and marketing functions, and external ecosystems of partners and suppliers. The transparency of integration with customers, along with Haier’s design, production and field feedback processes, have resulted in operational improvements across many domains.
HP — HP’s Instant Ink subscription service for replacement ink supplies provides customers the convenience of never running out of ink. Customers pay a monthly fee and in return receive ink deliveries as soon as the printer communicates to HP that it is running low, ensuring a continuous supply of ink without the need for clients to manually order. The service uses IoT technology with embedded analytics to monitor ink usage and levels in the printer cartridge to forecast, plan and automatically replenish replacement cartridges through a new supply chain fulfilment model. The Instant Ink program, which was delivered in just over nine months through joint efforts between supply chain, marketing, R&D, finance and IT, provides savings for HP customers, improvements in HP’s cash flow as well as significant reductions in the environmental footprint related to the purchase and disposal of the ink cartridge.
Consumer/Retail Supply Chainnovator:
Consumer Product: Clorox — Clorox won for its value chain segmentation (VCS) initiative in which it developed capabilities across multiple value chains, from the retailer’s shelf back to its supplier’s suppliers, allowing Clorox to deliver more profitably on consumer, product, market and company strategy requirements. To develop this, Clorox systematically identified the needs of consumers and retailers and worked backward to identify the differentiated value chain requirements across the product portfolio. The initiative better services consumer needs, delivers on increased demands from retail partners, and supports new and very different product distribution channels. VCS has delivered more than $40 million in cumulative value in the areas of profit improvement, revenue growth, cost savings, inventory optimization and capital spend.
Retail: Argos — Argos won for its high-impact supply chain initiative that delivered a transformation of its operations from what was a traditional catalog-based retailer that operated 750 stores, to what is now one of the leading digital retailers in the U.K. Successfully integrating its store and online channels while delivering a step change in terms of fulfilment capabilities — it now offers as standard, same-day pick-up and delivery to 95 percent of the U.K., 364 days per year, across a range of 20,000 SKUs.
Through the Supply Chainnovator research and recognition program, Gartner recognizes supply chain innovation and impact delivered by supply chain organizations. Companies recognized as Chainnovators have been successful with unconventional, innovative and/or high-impact approachesggg that peer leaders can learn from and emulate. The program provides chief supply chain officers with valuable insight for annual strategic planning, resource allocation and investment cycles.
These innovations must meet the threshold of being impactful, sustainable, unconventional, collaborative and measurable. Participants must be willing to share with the broader supply chain community lessons learned and how results were achieved. The goal is to recognize innovative approaches to supply chain excellence that result in a step change in business performance. The winners were selected by a panel of judges that consisted of Gartner analysts.
The identification of a Gartner award winner or finalist is not an endorsement by Gartner of any vendor, product or service.
