MNP expected by year-end

23 Jan 2008

Tayfun Acarer, head of Turkey’s telecoms regulator, the Telecommunications Board (TK), says he expects mobile number portability (MNP) to be implemented by the end of this year. A report from local newspaper Today’s Zaman says TK has concluded the tender process for determining the firms to install necessary infrastructure and that the works will be completed in the last quarter. The country’s largest mobile operator, Turkcell, began a legal challenge to MNP in April last year, saying it would not work in the form proposed by the regulator at that time. Acarer now says, however, that the watchdog has received ‘positive reactions’ from Turkcell following their latest negotiations on MNP, though he could not confirm whether or not the cellco was withdrawing its legal case.
