Number portability coming soon

1 May 2008

After the Supreme Court of Appeals rejected Turkcell’s attempt to block mobile number portability (MNP), which allows customers to keep their existing number when switching network service providers, Turkey’s Telecommunications Board announced it will introduce new regulations in November to implement an MNP system. Tayfun Acarer, chief of the Board, said the system is expected to be operational as soon as next month, giving the country’s three mobile operators, Turkcell, Avea and Vodafone, six months to prepare for the introduction. Turk Telekom, the country’s fixed line phone company also plans to implement number portability by April 2009.
