Turk Telekom deploys submarine cable to Northern Cyprus
According to WorldBulletin.net, Turk Telekom has completed work on a 213km submarine cable linking mainland Turkey to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), the nominally independent state whose territory comprises the north-eastern part of the island of Cyprus. The cable, which has been named TURCYOS-2, will meet increasing data traffic demands in the TRNC, and grant users faster access to next generation technologies. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Turkish transportation minister Binali Yildirim commented: ‘TURCYOS-2 will further boost communication network between Turkey and the TRNC. We need to expand highways of communication if we do not want to face setbacks like we did in past years’. To date, only Turkey has recognised the TRNC’s independence, whilst the international community at large considers it to be occupied territory of the Republic of Cyprus.
