Turkcell has awarded Ericsson a contract to increase the voice and data traffic capacity on its nationwide GSM network. The financial details of the deal were not disclosed. Turkcell currently presides over infrastructure which incorporates 12,000 base stations and reaches 97.2% of the population. It is Turkey’s largest cellular operator, with 30.8 million subscribers and a 60.5% market share at the end of December, according to figures from TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database.

Meanwhile, Turkcell’s nearest rival, Vodafone Turkey, has revealed that it has already added more than a million net new customers in the first three months of this year to take its total customer base to 13.8 million. The firm recently completed a rebranding exercise which has seen it drop the Telsim name in favour of its parent company’s international brand.
