Turkcell to launch 3G in June

18 Feb 2009

Turkcell, Turkey’s largest mobile operator by subscribers, says it is aiming to launch its first commercial 3G networks in June this year. The firm’s Chief business development officer Cenk Serdar told Total Telecom that there are no plans for any 3G network sharing deals. Turkcell was one of three firms to win a 3G licence in December, alongside existing cellular market rivals Vodafone and Avea. Serdar says there is still a huge opportunity in Turkey’s under-penetrated broadband market, with broadband penetration standing at just 33%. Turkcell plans to target unconnected households with both 3G and with its fibre network, which is being rolled out by its subsidiary Tellcom.
